Welcome to the long awaited Episode 3 of Indie Invasion! I’m truly sorry that it took so long to get around to recording this but finding free time is rather difficult. But enough of that, today we are spotlighting a superbly talented musician from Cologne, Germany named Julia Kotowski.

Entertainment for the Braindead’s music can be considered as acoustic, private, fragile and touching. Therefore Julia coined the term “acoustic dilettante post-something”, which refers to her unique D.I.Y. attitude that goes all along in the process of creating her music.
Just like her debut “Hypersomnia”, her new EP “Hydrophobia” is full of heart and soul and was created in her parents’ living room. There she spent hours in front of her laptop, recording track by track with a simple USB-microphone. Behind closed doors – with an open heart and mind – these colourful sounds and melodies of “Hydrophobia” emerged. Ukulele, guitar and flute are ever-present instruments, just like her unconventional percussion that consists of jars, cans, boxes, drawers and peppermills. Sweet music! It sounds really good – I also use a USB mic for my recordings, maybe if I put more time into them I could get them to sound as amazing as those….
The last part of the show, with just you talking, was messed up – it only came through on the right channel. With normal speakers it shouldn’t be a problem, but with headphones on it is a little annoying.
Also, if you’re looking for cheap and good hosting, check out NearlyFreeSpeech.net – it’s a pay-for-what-you-use hosting service. They’ll even set you up with a domain. I think it’s 1 cent for every megabyte of storage you use and $1 for every gigabyte of bandwidth your visitors use (and the price goes down the more bandwidth you use) – so it’s a fair amount cheaper than $10 a month for like 300 GB of space that won’t get used. If you’re uploading, say, 20 MB podcasts, that’s 20 cents a month, and if 50 people listen to your podcast off your site, then it’s another dollar on top of that for bandwidth usage. It’s a pretty sweet operation and you should check it out. (Now, if 500 people are listening to your podcast, that still only adds up to $5 in bandwidth fees. Once you get visitors on the thousands that are eating up tons of bandwidth, their business model doesn’t seem so great and you might want to switch to one with just a set rate, but as a small start-up it’s the cheapest there is, easily) https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/

Thanks for telling me man, my current recording setup has some issues and, as you noticed, I only get one channel. If I ever get around to it I’ll be able to record higher quality stuff with my recording equipment I use for music production.
Luckily for me my podcast files are hosted by archive.org for free and I’m happy with the arrangement I have, in that area. What I’d really like is a website that I have complete control over. Wordpress.com is nice but there are a lot of things I’d like to do that I can’t do here. But I’ll definitely check it out NearlyFreeSpeech it sounds amazing and I just might be able to turn indieinvasion.net a reality.
